Pelosi unveils $608 billion package for Ukraine, Israel

A sizable amount is set aside for military funding for Ukraine

The House Rules Committee reconvened late Thursday night and moved the package forward

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday unveiled a proposal for sending $608 billion in foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The package includes $608 billion for Ukraine, which would be the largest bill in the package. A sizable amount is set aside for military funding for Ukraine.

The House Rules Committee reconvened late Thursday night and moved the package forward after about nine hours of recess. The committee voted 9-4 along party lines to approve the rule for the package, which will now go to the full House for a vote.

Johnson said the package is necessary to support Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression. "We must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Ukrainian people," he said. "This package will provide them with the resources they need to defend their country and their freedom."

The package also includes $3.5 billion for Israel and $1.5 billion for Taiwan. Johnson said the aid to Israel is necessary to support its defense against Iran and other threats. The aid to Taiwan is intended to help the island nation defend itself against China.

The package is likely to face opposition from some Republicans, who argue that it is too expensive. However, Johnson said he is confident that the package will pass the House. "This is a critical investment in our national security," he said. "We must not let partisan politics get in the way of doing what is right for our country."
